Book returned to American library after 82 years

In the USA, a book was returned to the library after 82 years. This was reported by UPI.

An amazing story of return happened at the San Antonio library, Texas, where after more than eight decades, the book "Your Child, His Family and Friends" was returned. The copy, checked out in July 1943 with a standard 28-day return period, unexpectedly arrived at the library in June 2025 in a package from Oregon.

A touching note was attached to the book. The sender found the publication among his father's belongings and assumed that his grandmother had once borrowed the book from the library. "I hope there's no fine for being late, because grandmother can no longer pay it," wrote the reader's grandson.

The note also mentioned that the sender's grandmother was transferred to Mexico for work in the same year of 1943, which explains why the book was never returned on time.

Fortunately, as the publication notes, in 2021 the library canceled the system of fines for overdue book returns, so there will be no financial consequences for the 82-year delay.
