As a result of yesterday's earthquakes in the Sea of Marmara, a large-scale rupture of a fault section with a length of about 35 km and a width of 9.5 km was formed, reports TUT.AZ.
According to a preliminary report from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of the Turkish government (AFAD), after the main shock with a magnitude of 6.2 in Istanbul, an impressive number of aftershocks were recorded — 184, with 7 of them reaching a magnitude of 4 and above.
The document notes that the epicenters of these tremors were predominantly located on the northern edge of the central basin of the Sea of Marmara and in areas adjacent to the main fault line.
AFAD's Scientific Council on Earthquakes in its preliminary assessment indicates a significant displacement along the fault line — approximately 30 centimeters.
Recall that a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 occurred on April 23 off the coast of Silivri in Istanbul at 12:49 local time, its tremors were felt in neighboring provinces. Seismologists recorded an underground shock in the central segment of the North Anatolian Fault at a depth of about 7 km. Notably, the earthquake lasted about 13 seconds and was felt over a vast area with a radius of 300 km.
