A powerful coronal hole is forming on the Sun: Earthlings prepare for a new magnetic storm
"The coronal hole is rapidly increasing on the Sun's side facing Earth. Over the past day, there was a sharp jump in its size — the area expanded by approximately 50%," report specialists from the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Scientists warn that an accelerated solar wind flow is expected in the area of the formed hole, which will provoke a noticeable disturbance in our planet's geomagnetic environment as early as the beginning of next week.
Notably, the Earth recently experienced the most powerful magnetic storm in the last two months, as reported by the laboratory of solar astronomy at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The previous geomagnetic disturbance lasted more than 30 hours, reaching a peak level of G2.0 — a moderate strength indicator, which, nevertheless, became a record since a similar phenomenon observed on June 13-14.
