Gastroenterologist revealed dangerous properties of coffee for the digestive system
Gastroenterologist Olga Chistik in a conversation with "Lenta.ru" explained in detail how the popular drink affects the gastrointestinal tract and who should limit its consumption.
The specialist noted that coffee significantly increases the reflex activity of the intestines after eating. For people with irritable bowel syndrome, the consequences can be very unpleasant - frequent urges to defecate, painful spasms, and diarrhea.
"In people with sensitive stomachs, coffee reduces the tone of the lower esophageal sphincter, which causes heartburn and belching. For those with gastritis or reflux, it's better to consume coffee with food and only in the first half of the day," Chistik clarified.
The doctor especially emphasized the danger of consuming coffee on an empty stomach for people with digestive system problems. In such cases, the drink provokes increased production of stomach acid, which irritates the already sensitive mucous membrane. Interestingly, coffee itself does not cause dehydration, however, with insufficient fluid intake, it can cause constipation.
